MORGAN HILL, Calif. /California Newswire/ — Traditional publishing companies reject 98 percent of new authors, but authors like Moshe Kai Cavalin are quickly discovering that self-publishing can be done effectively with today's Print-on-Demand (POD) technology. In March of 2012, Moshe Kai Cavalin's "We Can Do" (ISBN: 9781618630452), published using POD technology by Bookstand Publishing, made Amazon's Top 100 list, showing how successful an author with a dream can be.

Bookstand Publishing's President, Andy Baldwin, reminds budding authors that any author can achieve the same success: "Bookstand Publishing helped 'We Can Do' become a successful book. We can help any author publish a book and show them the tools to make their book successful."

Baldwin offers authors the same tools that Moshe Kai used to become a success. One of these tools is a free book that is available to anyone who is interested in the process of self-publishing: "Moshe Kai used our paperback book, 'The Self-Publishing Checklist: How to Prepare Your Manuscript for Publication and Promote Your Book,' to prepare his book for publication. Any potential author can also request a FREE copy of this book at www.bookstandpublishing.com/pod4/ ."

Armed with a great story and "The Self-Publishing Checklist," Moshe Kai's book became a huge success. It is stories such as this that remind authors that today there are options, and that self-publishing is not a pursuit of vanity; rather, it is a way to unfetter authors from traditional publishers, keep their royalties, control the creative process every step of the way, and forge their own success that is in line with their vision, not the vision of the publisher.

About Bookstand Publishing:

Since 1996, Bookstand Publishing – www.bookstandpublishing.com – has been providing authors with the tools to publish and market their books at affordable rates. Bookstand Publishing takes a book from manuscript all the way to published book, allowing authors to maintain complete control over the process, and approve their book before anything goes to print so that their final book will appear exactly the way that they want it to. As a Print-on-Demand publisher, Bookstand prints the books as the orders come in to ensure that authors only purchase exactly what they need. They also ensure that books are available through the major book wholesalers, and offer a variety of marketing and publicity services to help promote the final product.

About Moshe Kai Cavalin:

Moshe Kai Cavalin's story is a remarkable one. At the age of 8, he enrolled in college; at the age of 11, he earned his first of two Associate of Arts degrees from East Los Angeles Community College; now, at the age of 14, as he prepares to graduate from UCLA, he wrote and published his first book, "We Can Do."

About "We Can Do":

Moshe Kai Cavalin's inspirational story asserts that he is not a genius, but rather, that every youngster can, with good planning, a strong heart, hard work, and a resilient mind, can succeed beyond all expectations.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /California Newswire/ — Jackie Fame, Inc. (FAME), the leading kid/teen social network www.JFame.com, is joining forces with The Weinstein Company to promote the movie "Bully." After much debate over the rating, the PG-13 version of the anti-bullying documentary will open in 115 theaters.

FAME and the AMC Cinema chain will sponsor several "Bully Movie Events" across the country, with selected theaters offering free admission to a one-night "Bully" awareness event – with the continued goal of involving parents, students, educators, and advocates in the movement to ending bullying.

In addition, with every "Bully" ticket purchased through www.MovieTickets.com FAME will provide a free download of its book "Kid2Kid, Keepin' it Safe Online" (ISBN: 978-0-675-50025-6) made available for the NOOK and Kindle eBook formats. "Kid2Kid" includes great advice for young people about staying safe online, and includes a chapter about preventing bullying in cyberspace and in everyday life.

"We are happy to join The Weinstein Company's 'Bully' campaign to help raise awareness about the serious effects of bullying. We hope to help inspire kids from around the world to stand up to bullying," said Zachary Swauger, age 13, FAME co-founder.

"This has always been a mission of the Jackie Fame network," added Joshua Swauger 11, FAME co-founder. "In 2011, we launched 'We Have the Power' at www.WeHaveThePower.net – a grass roots awareness movement about the terrible effects of bullying on school-aged kids. We recorded an original song, produced by DJ Boom and Hip-Hop recording artist G-Money. We wrote the lyrics to express how deeply concerned we are about bullying and its effect on our peers."

The FAME co-founders hope all school-aged kids and their parents will see "Bully" and join together in the fight to stop all forms of bullying.

About "Bully":

Directed by Sundance and Emmy-award winning filmmaker, Lee Hirsch, "Bully" is a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary. At its heart are those with huge stakes in this issue whose stories each represent a different facet of America's bullying crisis. "Bully" follows five kids and families over the course of a school year. Stories include two families who have lost children to suicide and a mother awaiting the fate of her 14-year-old daughter who has been incarcerated after bringing a gun on her school bus.

With an intimate glimpse into homes, classrooms, cafeterias and principals' offices, the film offers insight into the often cruel world of the lives of bullied children. As teachers, administrators, kids and parents struggle to find answers, "Bully" examines the dire consequences of bullying through the testimony of strong and courageous youth. Through the power of their stories, the film aims to be a catalyst for change in the way we deal with bullying as parents, teachers, children and society as a whole.

ALAMEDA, Calif. /California Newswire/ — The Pacific Pinball Museum (PPM) of Alameda, California is pleased to announce that PPM has been chosen as a recipient of a grant from the Neotrope(R) 2012 Non-Profit PR Grants Program. With this commitment, Neotrope aligns itself with the PPM in educating and entertaining children and adults through the preservation of pinball, while making eight decades of games available to be played by everyone.

This grant will help the Pacific Pinball Museum further its mission: "To inspire an interest in science, art and history through pinball and to preserve and promote this important part of American culture." The museum accomplishes this through the operation of the Pacific Pinball Museum, a beautifully maintained selection of 90 fully playable pinball machines. In addition, PPM hosts the world's largest pinball show: the Pacific Pinball Exposition once a year. PPM also furthers its mission through the creation of traveling pinball art and science exhibits that capture the amazing visuals and communicate the basics of physics and electricity used in pinball.

"Neotrope's recognition of PPM's dedication and focus in addition to their work with other charities and nonprofits is truly appreciated. Neotrope will be invaluable as we plan the world's largest pinball show: our sixth annual Pacific Pinball Exposition for September 21 – 23, 2012," said Larry Zartarian, the Museum's Chairman of the Board.

Americans instantly recognize pinball as an American icon along with Jazz, Coca-Cola(R), the jukebox and Elvis. The PPM ensures future generations can appreciate the American ingenuity and creativity that fueled an entire pinball industry for years to come. The museum is currently developing curriculum for students of all ages to learn the basic theories behind pinball mechanisms and concepts such as gravity, momentum and acceleration.

As part of this grant program, Neotrope is providing PR solutions, news dissemination (through its Send2Press(R) Newswire service), and search marketing for the PPM to help raise awareness of its efforts in education, community service, science, art and fundraising. The museum's goal is to move to a permanent location that can house its collection of 900-plus machines, offer larger teaching and restoration facilities, and expand its art gallery that features local and international artists.

"Having Neotrope aboard will help drive and refine our vision to become the Smithsonian of Pinball," said Michael Schiess, PPM Founder and Director. "Our growing team of artists, technicians, volunteers, enthusiasts and visionaries will now be able to spread the word and scope of their efforts."

"We're honored to be providing assistance to the Pacific Pinball Museum, in both keeping alive eight decades of pinball history, and building educational art, science and historical programs that spark interest in intellectual pursuit," said Christopher Laird Simmons, CEO of Neotrope(R).

About the Pacific Pinball Museum (PPM):

PPM unlocks the imagination of visitors with pinball back glass art that features themes such as fantasies of the future, beautiful women, sports heroics, outer space, the Wild West and many more. A key member of the museum's collection of one-of-a-kind exhibits is the Visible Pinball, a fully functional pinball machine housed in a clear cabinet. The Visible Pin mesmerizes anyone who has ever wondered what goes on inside a machine while it's being played and gives instructors an opportunity to point out the details of the machine's operation while it is being used. Other exhibits discuss magnetism, momentum, statistics and the patented inventions that several ingenious Americans have devised just for pinball.

Giant (sometimes 10-foot by 10-foot) hand-painted acrylic mural reproductions of original pinball back glass art cover vast swaths of PPM's walls. From Space Ship to Sea Ray, from Majorettes to Jungle Princess, these unique pieces of art created just for PPM are also available as an off-site exhibit or simply as an eye-popping example of the depth of skill pinball artists and designers employ while promoting individual games. Artists working at pinball companies Gottlieb, Williams and Bally unintentionally captured highlights of history while designing the art that decorate pinball games.

Christian Marche's pointy people and Gordon Morison's over-the-top psychedelia capture the mood of the '60s and '70s while the content of various pinball artists' work often captures historic moments like the moon shot, the British rock invasion or the patriotic spirit following World War II.

PPM is popular with families, couples on their first date, school groups and local companies who hold special occasion parties there. The museum offers a party room for rent by the hour while guests enjoy the historical selection of games that range from 1878 to 2012. Parties at PPM are like having access to an entire arcade or someone's massive game room to celebrate a personal occasion. Also among the regulars at PPM are some of the world's highest-ranked pinball players and most experienced repair technicians.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — On Tuesday, Mayor Edwin M. Lee, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) and partners Market Street Railway (MSR) and Historypin announced the launch of ‘Treasures from the Muni Archive,’ a new exhibit of photographs from Muni’s extensive archive celebrating the last 100 years. The exhibit is installed on Muni transit shelters along Market Street, at the MSR Museum and on Historypin, a project of the London-based non-profit We Are What We Do.

“San Francisco is excited to launch the ‘Treasures from the Muni Archive’ exhibit to engage the City about Muni’s rich past and begin the celebration of Muni’s centennial,” said Mayor Lee. “The high-tech features of this exhibit make history come alive and represent San Francisco’s commitment to innovation.”

“With nearly 30,000 photos in the SFMTA archive, we are pleased to have such a unique way to share them with residents and visitors,” said SFMTA Director of Transportation Edward D. Reiskin. “We are grateful to our long-standing partner, MSR, and one of our newest partners, Historypin, for making this exciting exhibit possible.”

“Our City has one of the richest transportation histories in America,” said MSR President Rick Laubscher. “We salute Muni for the work it is doing in preserving its own precious archives and sharing them with San Franciscans and visitors alike through this project. We’re proud to help on this and other activities marking Muni’s centennial.”

The SFMTA’s civic art project takes visitors from a traditional exhibit of approximately 20 archive images at the MSR Museum that were featured in the book, “San Francisco’s Municipal Railway: Muni,” to the city’s streets where semi-transparent, site-specific images have been mounted on the backs of Muni wave shelters along Market Street between the Museum and the Powell Cable Car turnaround. The physical exhibit is supported by an extensive online collection from Muni’s archives at Historypin.com.

“The SFMTA Photographic Archive’s innovative displays have turned bus shelters into free history museums,” said Historypin CEO Nick Stanhope. “While San Francisco may be the first city doing it, I fully expect this trend to catch on around the world.”

With the help of Historypin, the SFMTA can now share a tour of site-specific images. Shelter displays have a QR code that allow viewers to access a summary of the exhibit and a link to the free Historypin.com app. The app allows the viewer mobile access to Historypin’s site where they can explore numerous photos of their current location, explore the full Historypin collection or post their own photograph from that location. The SFMTA Archive’s page on Historypin will also be available on interactive monitors at the MSR Museum.

The Municipal Railway was founded on December 28, 1912. During Muni’s centennial year there will be several events to provide people with information about Muni’s world-renown transit history, including additional photography exhibits from Muni’s archive that dates back to the 19th century, vintage vehicles in City events and, in collaboration with MSR, a revival of the popular trolley festivals. Centennial events officially kick off in the Spring.

About Market Street Railway
Market Street Railway is the nonprofit preservation partner of the San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni), the city agency that owns and operates San Francisco’s transit system, including its historic streetcars and cable cars. The 1200-member organization’s leaders were a driving force in making vintage streetcars a permanent part of the San Francisco scene. Today, besides supporting Muni’s historic streetcar and cable car service, Market Street Railway operates the San Francisco Railway Museum across from the Ferry Building at 77 Steuart Street as part of its mission of preserving historic transit in San Francisco.

About Historypin
Historypin is a way for millions of people to come together, from across different generations, cultures and places, to share small glimpses of the past and to build up the huge story of human history. Everyone has history to share: whether it’s sitting in yellowed albums in the attic, collected in piles of crackly tapes, conserved in the 1000s of archives all over the world or passed down in memories and old stories. Each of these pieces of history finds a home on Historypin, where everyone has the chance to see it, add to it, learn from it, debate it and use it to build up a more complete understanding of the world. Historypin has been developed by the not-for-profit company We Are What We Do, in partnership with Google.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. /California Newswire/ -- Mayor Edwin M. Lee today announced the return of the popular Sunday Streets program with a full schedule of car-free events starting Sunday, March 11th, along the Embarcadero.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — Mayor Edwin M. Lee on Wednesday announced the return of the popular Sunday Streets program with a full schedule of car-free events starting Sunday, March 11th, along the Embarcadero. The eight-month Sunday Streets 2012 season opens streets to pedestrians, cyclists and people-powered wheels of all kinds by temporarily removing vehicular traffic on select Sundays, transforming street-space usually reserved for cars into recreational space for everyone to enjoy safely.

“Sunday Streets not only showcases San Francisco’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, it is a proven cost-effective way to better health for San Franciscans,” said Mayor Lee. “We’re committed to ensuring the program’s continued growth and success in 2012 and beyond. We look forward to returning to Chinatown, doing a more frequent Mission route, and adding a new route in the Southwest neighborhoods of our City to bring the benefits of Sunday Streets to more San Francisco neighborhoods.”

Founded in 2008, Sunday Streets has grown from two events to 10 and creates miles of car-free space on City roads. San Francisco was the third city in the United States to premier this free, community-oriented initiative. Since then it has become the nation’s largest, and one of the City’s most exciting initiatives promoting benefits such as biking, walking, recreation, and community-building. The program was one of only eight programs in the country to be selected for possible inclusion in Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” anti-obesity campaign.

Highlights this year include:
· Continuing and possibly expanding the new Chinatown event;
· Increasing the popular Mission District event to four consecutive events held on the first Sunday of May, June, July and August; and
· Introducing a new route in Southwestern neighborhoods.

Sunday Streets is presented by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and Livable City, Sunday Streets’ non-profit fiscal partner. The 2012 season is co-presented by Bank of America. The Mayor’s Office, San Francisco Police Department, Department of Public Works and the Recreation and Parks Department.
“We are proud to host our most ambitious Sunday Streets program to date,” said SFMTA Director of Transportation Ed Reiskin. “The Sunday Streets program has a tremendous impact on San Franciscans and visitors alike, who have started to envision the streets in a whole new way; not just as a means to get from place to place, but as an opportunity to create a healthier, more connected City for all.”

“Sunday Streets brings tens of thousands of people outside to explore more than 20 distinct neighborhoods of San Francisco. As a global company founded in San Francisco, Bank of America is proud to support this wonderful event,” said Bank of America San Francisco and East Bay Market President Martin Richards. “Sunday Streets and Bank of America share a commitment to building economically strong, connected, healthy communities in San Francisco and to celebrate the many diverse communities that benefit from the program.”

Financial partners include: AT&T, Shape Up SF, Kaiser Permanente, Bay Area Air Quality Management District, California Pacific Medical Center, PG&E, Lennar, Park Merced, The Seed Fund, The California Endowment and UCSF. Neighborhood sponsors include Sports Basement, Mikes Bikes, REI, CH2MHILL, Clif Kid, The New Wheel, Darling International, Bi-Rite Markets, and The Exploratorium. Major in-kind support is provided by The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter, which provides Emergency Medical support, City CarShare and Parkwide LLC. The San Francisco Examiner and Clear Channel Radio are media sponsors. The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition runs Sunday Streets’ volunteer program.

Business community support includes Fisherman’s Wharf, Tenderloin and Fillmore Community Benefits Districts, Lower 24th Street (Mission), Bayview, Taraval and Outer Sunset and Valencia Corridor Merchant Associations, San Francisco and Chinese Chambers of Commerce, and dozens of community groups representing host neighborhoods along Sunday Streets routes.

Sunday Streets 2012 Season Schedule (subject to change):
· March 11: Embarcadero- Season kick off
· April 15: Great Highway/Golden Gate park- new route through the park

LOS ANGELES, Calif. /California Newswire/ — Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa issued the following statement Saturday on the passing of Whitney Houston: “Today, Los Angeles mourns the loss of Whitney Houston, one of the greatest voices of all time. It is with deep sadness that we reflect upon a life taken from us too soon, and a woman whose talents touched so many.

During my years as Mayor, I was fortunate to have the chance to meet and know Whitney. Not only was she the most awarded female recording artist of all time, but she was one of the world’s best-selling singers.

These stunning achievements are not only hard to overstate, but they will unlikely be eclipsed in our lifetime. Her music inspired millions and the power of her voice was hard to match in its depth and crystalline beauty.

I am thankful that we will have her beautiful music as a constant reminder of the light she brought with her.

My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this difficult time.

On the eve of the Grammy Awards, and as we celebrate Black History Month, it is important to pause and honor Whitney, Etta James and Don Cornelius, who have all passed in recent weeks. We recognize their departures have left a wake of sadness and loss, but know that their legends and accomplishments will live on.”
