FRANKFORT, Ky., May 02, 2019 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- The Governor of Kentucky, Matt Bevin, officially declared May 2019 as Lyme Disease awareness month all across the state. Patient advocate Christina Kovacs lead the charge to raise awareness for the disease after battling late stage Lyme disease herself. Kovacs worked with Bevin and his office to draft an official statewide Proclamation which was signed into effect this year.

The effects of Lyme Disease can be debilitating when left untreated, making it vitally important to catch the disease in the acute stage and get proper treatment. Cases of the disease are on the ride, with the CDC stating at least 300,000 new cases a year.

"With Lyme Disease, prevention is key," commented Kovacs. "Ticks are the most active in the Spring and Summer, so it's vital to wear proper tick repellant when spending time outdoors and to also do a full body tick check when coming back inside."

Signs of Lyme Disease include a bullseye rash, fever, muscle aches, bell's palsy and flu like symptoms. If any of these are spotted it's recommended to seek medical attention immediately and request Lyme disease testing

About Christina Kovacs:
Christina Kovacs is a patient advocate who was diagnosed with neurological Lyme disease in 2011, and made it her mission to educate Kentuckians about this rapidly growing disease. Kovacs became bed-bound for years and underwent many difficult treatments, which fueled her passion for patient advocacy. Kovacs now works closely with fellow patients and organizations alike to spread awareness and raise money for research. She's partnered with local hospital Kings Daughters Medical Center to help give medical items to patients in need, as well as larger scale organizations such as Global Lyme Alliance and The LymeLight Foundation who provides treatment grants to children in need.
