Calif. Speaker Rendon Appoints Antonia Hernandez to Council on Healthcare Delivery Systems

SACRAMENTO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — Calif. Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Lakewood) today announced his appointment of Antonia Hernandez to the Council on Healthcare Delivery Systems. “When Antonia says that single-payer health care delivery is the ideal we need to work toward, she encompasses both the dream of serving all Californians and the practical attitude it will take to get there,” Speaker Rendon said.

Speaker Anthony Rendon
“What she brings to the council is an unbroken record of working for the underdog and a proven history of producing results. I look forward to seeing her at work, together with appointees from the Senate and Administration.”

Hernandez, 70, of Pasadena, is president and CEO of the California Community Foundation, a position she has held since 2004. She was previously president and general counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF). Hernandez is a Democrat.

The council was created in 2018 and is tasked with developing a plan to achieve a health care delivery system in California that provides coverage and access through a unified financing system for all Californians. The council has five members – one appointed by the Assembly speaker, one by the Senate Rules Committee, and three by the governor.

Hernandez supports a single-payer health care system, writing in the Sacramento Bee in August 2018, “Single-payer healthcare system is the ideal we are working for…Private sector-based health care has been in operation for decades and it has not worked.”

Members of the commission serve without compensation and shall by reimbursed for necessary traveling and other expenses incurred in performing duties and responsibilities.
