Calif. State Assembly Elects Dr. Bryon G. Gustafson as Chief Sergeant-at-Arms

SACRAMENTO, Calif. /California Newswire/ — The California State Assembly today unanimously elected Bryon G. Gustafson, Ph.D., to serve as the Assembly’s chief sergeant-at-arms. Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (D-Paramount) administered the oath of office to Dr. Gustafson shortly after the vote.

Dr. Gustafson most recently served as chief of police at the Stockton Unified School District Police Department, an agency serving more than 40,000 students, faculty, and staff at more than 50 schools.

Previously, Dr. Gustafson was chief of the standards, evaluation, and research bureau at the California Department of Justice Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training from 2005-2014. He also served as an affiliated faculty researcher at the University of Colorado, Denver where his work focused on training and policy interventions relative to the causes of fatal and career-ending law enforcement traffic collisions.

Dr. Gustafson holds a Ph.D. in public affairs from the University of Colorado, Denver. He earned his Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Southern California and his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Excelsior College.

Dr. Gustafson is married to Dr. Sara E. McClellan, an organizational communication and development consultant. They have two cats and make their home in downtown Sacramento.
