Thomas Dolby Blinded Me With His New Hair – SCIENCE!

MUSEWIRE / Long time fans of Thomas Dolby have likely noticed over the years the ’80s recording artist losing his hair, often wearing hats on stage in modern solo and group performances. Well, this week (May 17) Dolby posted a video on social and my first thought was “It’s Dolby’s ‘evil twin brother’!” He was going to reveal something new – not a new song, tour or album, but new hair. He posted a full video showing off his new shock of grey hair yesterday, and frankly, he looks great.

Thomas Dolby is, of course, most well known for his pop hit, “She Blinded Me with Science.” Recent songs I happen to like include “Evil Twin Brother,” hence the reference.

As Dolby notes in his video reveal, “How I Got My Hair Back,” those of us of a certain age (I am a couple of years younger than Dolby) used to unfortunately make fun of the “bad rug” from the early era of sometimes laughable hairpieces. Sadly, folks would make fun of them with jabs liie “where did you get that dead poodle on your head.” For many who are hair challenged (Dolby started losing his hair in his 20s), the past decade or two has seen great improvements in hair pieces, especially in the performing arts, musicians, actors/actresses and business folk who want to feel better about themselves. I have a guitar player friend who had a long hair hairpiece, that I had no idea for couple of years until he revealed “the truth.” Had no idea.

In his video (linked below), he certainly reveals that it was more of a personal choice, and I interpreted this as a long time frustration with not having hair anymore. He wasn’t pushed by his significant other, or cigar chomping business manager (I made that one up). Certainly his true fans never go “dude, what happened to your hair.” Well, actually I did think that a number of years ago, but hey, we are all getting older.

Dolby does rightly note that the stigma with hair pieces is not what it once was. Folks with thinning hair often get hair transplants now, and the doll hair era is certainly gone. And in Dolby’s case, his “new hair” looks really good, and suits him. It gives him a little bit more of his boyish glow back, and he really does look happy about it.

As he is currently on tour, those seeing him in person will be able to see his new do in person.
